EOTWSG Tactics
In a total collapse or SHTF (Sh*t Hits The Fan) scenario, the definition of "home" shifts instantly. It is no longer just a place of comfort and rest; it becomes your primary defensive position, your armory, and your sanctuary. When the rule of law evaporates and emergency services are non-existent, your survival depends entirely on your ability to detect, delay, and defend against those who would take what is yours.
A proper defensive strategy is built on concentric layers. You cannot rely on a single locked door or a single firearm. True security is a systemic, unforgiving approach that begins at your property line and ends at your highly fortified "last stand" interior room. This guide outlines the essential steps to transforming a standard residential house into a hardened survival bastion capable of repelling organized, hostile elements.
01. Perimeter Defense & Early Warning
The absolute goal of perimeter defense is two-fold: deterrence and early warning. You want to make your home look like "too much work" and "too much risk" for a casual looter, while ensuring you are alerted the exact moment a serious threat crosses into your operational envelope.
Tactical Landscaping
Replace decorative shrubs with "defensive vegetation." Plant thorny, dense species like Holly, Hawthorn, Bougainvillea, or Rugosa Roses directly beneath all ground-floor windows. Maintain strict "clear zones" extending 30 feet from your walls to eliminate concealment for approaching intruders. Cut down lower branches of large trees up to 8 feet to prevent climbing access to your roof.
DIY Warning Systems
Deploy 12lb to 20lb test monofilament fishing line across natural approach paths, set shin-high. Connect these to tin cans filled with pebbles, or use spring-loaded perimeter trip alarms armed with 12-gauge blank primers. Low-tech mechanical reliability is king when the grid fails and EMPs fry electronics.
The Noise Discipline Protocol
Gravel is your best friend. Lay deep, crunchy gravel (like 3/4-inch crushed limestone) under windows, on primary footpaths, and near external doors. It is practically impossible to walk silently on deep, loose gravel. This creates a passive acoustic alarm that requires zero electricity, batteries, or maintenance, and alerts you instantly to weight shifts outside your walls.
Anti-Vehicular Measures (AVM)
In severe unrest, vehicles are frequently used as battering rams against garage doors or front entries. Stopping a 4,000lb truck requires physical mass, not just locked doors.
- Staggered Planters: Place heavy, concrete planters (filled with dirt and rebar) in a staggered zig-zag pattern in your driveway. This prevents vehicles from building speed for a ramming attack.
- Improvised Caltrops & Spikes: For severe threat levels, heavily nailed boards buried just beneath loose dirt or gravel on vehicle approaches can disable tires before the vehicle reaches your perimeter.
- Bollard Anchors: If you have the means pre-collapse, sink 4-inch steel pipes filled with concrete 3 feet into the ground across vulnerable access points.
02. Physical & Ballistic Hardening
Standard modern home construction is effectively "ballistically transparent." Drywall, siding, and standard fiberglass insulation will not stop a bullet. Hardening your structure is about creating actual cover (which stops incoming projectiles) rather than relying on just concealment (which only hides your physical form).
Securing the Breach Points: Doors & Windows
Before worrying about the walls, you must secure the fatal funnel entry points. A standard deadbolt mounted into a soft pine frame will fail to a single, determined kick.
-
The 3-Inch Rule
Remove the standard 1/2-inch screws from all door hinges and strike plates. Replace them with 3-inch or 4-inch hardened steel screws that bite deeply into the structural wall studs, not just the fragile door jamb.
-
Barricade Brackets
Install heavy-duty steel drop-bar brackets on the interior of all exterior doors. Utilize a standard, solid 2x4 to cross-brace the door horizontally against battering rams and coordinated kicks.
-
Security Window Film
Apply 8-mil to 12-mil shatter-resistant Mylar film to all ground-level windows. It won't stop a bullet, but it prevents glass from instantly shattering, delaying entry by precious minutes if attacked with a bat, brick, or crowbar. It forces the attacker to exhaust themselves trying to break the film.
Improvised Ballistic Cover
-
01
Sandbags (The Gold Standard)
Cheap, modular, and proven in every major conflict. A double layer (staggered like bricks) will stop almost any common rifle or handgun fire. Stage empty bags flat, and fill them with yard dirt only when threat levels spike to avoid rotting.
-
02
Densely Packed Books & Paper
Tightly packed paper is surprisingly bullet-resistant. Floor-to-ceiling bookshelves filled with thick, tightly wedged textbooks or reams of printer paper can effectively catch and stop most handgun and intermediate rifle rounds.
-
03
Planters & Hardened Furniture
Large, ceramic or thick plastic planters filled densely with dirt and positioned strategically in front of windows serve as excellent aesthetic cover. Overturn solid oak tables or heavy appliances to create hasty interior strongpoints.
03. Tactical Visual Archive
Declassified visual reconnaissance logs documenting structural integrity, perimeter layouts, interior strongpoints, and field fortification concepts.
